About the city

Rouen is a city located in northern France within the Normandy region. It is the capital of the Haute-Normandie region and also serves as a commune, which means it functions like a city-government. The city is known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and picturesque riverbanks along the River Seine. Rouen has been historically significant since Roman times, but it rose to prominence during the Middle Ages as one of the wealthiest cities in Europe due to its thriving port and textile industry. The city was heavily damaged during World War II, but much of its historical architecture has been restored, including the famous Rouen Cathedral, which was famously painted by Claude Monet several times. Rouen is also known for the tragic fate of Jeanne d'Arc (Joan of Arc), who was burned at the stake in the city in 1431 after being captured and put on trial by the English during the Hundred Years' War. There is a museum dedicated to her memory, called the "Historial Jeanne d'Arc," which opened in 2015. Today, Rouen is an important cultural and economic hub for the region, offering various attractions like the Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des Beaux-Arts), a historic astronomical clock (Gros Horloge), and the picturesque Rue du Gros-Horloge shopping street. The city is also famous for its cuisine, particularly its local specialty: duck confit with apples.
